Rolls-Royce has introduced a new low-emission combustion system for their future engines. The first test was successfully completed in Canada at -20*c, just a month after its first test run. The new demonstrator engine features the Advance3 and the Rolls-Royce UltraFan which also play very important roles in Rolls-Royce goal of the intelligent engine. The intelligent engine created by Rolls-Royce is envisioned to have revolutionary technological abilities and digital capabilities. This engine is monitored by ALECsys (Advanced Low Emissions Combustion System), which monitors weather and thrust requirements for the pilots. It does this by changing the mixture of fuel and air being sent to various parts of the aircraft depending on different factors.
This advanced computer system doesn’t only let the testers know if the engine successfully works while experiencing extreme weather, but also how it works in detail. This makes future advancement and replication easier for the company and industry. ALECSys (Advanced Low Emissions Combustion System), is partially funded by the European Union’s Clean Sky SAGE (Sustainable and Green Engine) program. They have been a part of other milestones for Rolls-Royce, including an Advance3 test engine and the Power Gearbox which both use or enable the UltraFan.
The Advance3 test engine had the same core architecture used in the Rolls-Royce UltraFan, while the Power Gearbox enables the Rolls-Royce UltraFan to be efficient. So efficient, it set an aerospace record in September by reaching a very high bypass ratio of 70,000hp. The Rolls-Royce UltraFan can be used in both narrow and wide-framed aircraft while providing 25% fuel efficiency improvement from the first-generation engines manufactured by Rolls-Royce.
